Michael Jackson, the child star turned King of Pop who set the world dancing but whose musical genius was overshadowed by a bizarre lifestyle and sex scandals, died on Thursday. He was 50.
Jackson was pronounced dead at about 2:26 p.m. PDT (2126 GMT) after arriving at a Los Angeles hospital in full cardiac arrest, said Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County Coroner's office. The cause of death was not known and an autopsy would likely take place on Friday, he said.
Jackson's sudden death had been reported earlier by U.S. media, which said he was taken ill at his home and rushed to the hospital by paramedics who found him not breathing when they arrived.
Known as the "King of Pop," for hits that included "Thriller" and "Billie Jean," Jackson's dramatic, one-gloved stage presence and innovative dance moves were imitated by legions of fans around the world.
He transformed music videos and his lifetime record sales tally is believed to be around 750 million, which, added to the 13 Grammy Awards he received, made him one of the most successful entertainers of all time.
But Jackson's belief that "I am Peter Pan in my heart", his preference for the company of children, his friendship with a chimp, his high-pitched voice and numerous plastic surgeries also earned him critics and the nickname "Wacko Jacko."
Jackson, who had lived as a virtual recluse since his acquittal in 2005 on charges of child molestation, had been scheduled to launch a comeback tour from London next month.
Quincy Jones, who helped arrange the music on the album "Thriller" and produced the "Off the Wall" album, told MSNBC: "I am absolutely devastated at this tragic and unexpected news."
"For Michael to be taken away from us so suddenly at such a young age, I just don't have the words. I've lost my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him."
SOLD-OUT SHOWS
Jackson had been due to start a series of concerts in London on July 13 running until March 2010. The singer had been rehearsing in the Los Angeles area for the past two months. The shows for the 50 London concerts sold out within minutes of going on sale in March.
"Rarely has the world received a gift with the magnitude of artistry, talent, and vision as Michael Jackson," said Neil Portnow, president and CEO of The Recording Academy in a statement.
"He was a true musical icon whose identifiable voice, innovative dance moves, stunning musical versatility, and sheer star power carried him from childhood to worldwide acclaim."
There were concerns about Jackson's health in recent years but the promoters of the London shows, AEG Live, said in March that Jackson had passed a 4-1/2 hour physical examination with independent doctors.
Outside the hospital in Los Angeles about 200 fans and reporters gathered on Thursday, waiting for confirmation of Jackson's death or condition.
Some fans were crying and hugging each other, and others were climbing atop fences to get a better look at a microphone stand where a news conference was supposed to take place.
"I hope he's gone to God, and I hope that he's free of all the troubles he's been plagued with," Tonya Blazer, 50, who said she had been a fan going back more than four decades to his days as a child star.
"I just feel like I'm paying tribute to him," said Dawn Burgess, 42, a fan who said she had posters of Michael pinned to her bedroom wall when she was a child.
CHILD STAR TO MEGASTAR
Jackson was born on Aug. 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, the seventh of nine children. Five Jackson boys -- Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael -- first performed together at a talent show when Michael was 6. They walked off with first prize and went on to become a best-selling band, The Jackson Five, and then The Jackson 5.
Jackson made his first solo album in 1972, and released "Thriller" in 1982, which became a smash hit that yielded seven top-10 singles. The album sold 21 million copies in the United States and at least 27 million worldwide.
The next year, he unveiled his signature "moonwalk" dance move while performing "Billie Jean" during an NBC special.
In 1994, Jackson married Elvis Presley's only child, Lisa Marie, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1996. Jackson married Debbie Rowe the same year and had two children, before splitting in 1999. The couple never lived together.
Jackson has three children named Prince Michael I, Paris Michael and Prince Michael II, known for his brief public appearance when his father held him over the railing of a hotel balcony, causing widespread criticism.
New Yorkers and tourists in the city's Times Square were shocked at the news of Jackson's death.
"I don't know what to say. It's sad, it's really, really sad," said Nicole Smith, an 18-year-old student from Brooklyn, New York, in Times Square. "My mother was a fan. I listened to his music."
"I'm shocked. I thought someone was lying to me when I first heard it. I was a fan from when he was a little boy and then he got weird," said Sue Sheider, 51, a teacher from Long Island.

Dude you dont even know a shit about him or you wouldnt be saying all that. To my point of view he was very kind person who always helped poors plus he always been a part of too many charities. But i tell you what...whatever negative things you heard about him is not true at all he was just accused for many false things. I dont really want to continue discuss about someone who already died, they still investigating the cause of his death but more likely he died of heart attack not cause of he couldnt too much fame. Get your facts straight.

so what does it tell you... heart attack right? And that....
In 2005, Jackson was tried and exonerated of child molestation, conspiracy and alcohol charges that could have sent him to prison for nearly 20 years.
Not true!

Madonna 'Can't Stop Crying' Over Jackson
One pop icon remembers another. We've just heard from Madonna on Jackson's death:
"I can't stop crying over the sad news. I have always admired Michael Jackson. The world has lost one of the greats, but his music will live on forever!
My heart goes out to his three children and other members of his family. God bless."
- Madonna
Justin Timberlake -- 'We Have Lost a Genius'
I can't find the words right now to express how deeply sadden [sic] I am by Michael's passing. We have lost a genius and a true ambassador of not only Pop music, but of all music. He has been an inspiration to multiple generations and I will always cherish the moments I shared with him on stage and all of the things I learned about music from him and the time we spent together. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones.
Timberlake has referred to Michael Jackson as his Idol in the past.
Jermaine -- They Tried to Revive for an Hour
Michael Jackson's brother, Jermaine Jackson, released a statement to the media at UCLA hospital -- telling the press a team of doctors at the medical center tried to resuscitate Michael for more than an hour.
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.tmz.com/media/2009/06/0625_jackson_fox11_video.jpg
TMZ also obtained a photo of Jermaine moments after he arrived at the hospital. The emotion in the photo speaks for itself.
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.tmz.com/media/2009/06/0625_jermaine_jackson_hugging.jpg
When I first heard it I couldn't even believe it..since at the time TMZ was the only
place that confirmed he's dead. CNN took quite a while to officially confirm it.
Even now every time I read "Michael Jackson is Dead" i get these little shocks.
Whatever happened in his personal life..setting that aside, Michael the artist
is a legend. The way he moved people, inspired..mesmerized..hes unforgettable,
greatest musical artist of all time. Even now his influence is everywhere in the
music world
And its so weird hours before he was taken to the hospital I was watching a
dance show where he was the theme of that episode, they all had to perform
on his songs and I was just amazed at how much I still enjoy his songs, and
his dancing my god who can move like that? His footwork is out of this world.
I saw him doing the moonwalk in circles and i even tried it..since its way harder
den the "normal" moonwalk.
50 is a very young age...I would have loved for him to be able to do those
concerts he was rehearsing for in LA. But one of the great things about music;
it lives on...he's dead but im sure nobody is ever gonna forget his music.
I keep hearing his songs playing in cafe's etc..just everywhere.
Anyway this post is getting too long, I dont except anyone to really read it.

He is someone who called himself as 'Bad' and 'Dangerous', and still was loved by one and all, the world over. We are indeed talking about the one and only 'King of Pop' Michael Jackson, the very name who invented the cult 'Moon Walking' dance step. Well, the entire world came to a standstill yesterday when this musical legend breathed his last. He suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away, thus bringing the musical world to a grinding halt!
Sajid (of Sajid-Wajid duo): "It is a big loss for the music industry, and he was a legend of sorts, someone who never paid heed to the image or personality, that he carried and the way we remember Bob Marley, Michael Jackson also falls in the same league. Today is by far a very mournful day for the entire music industry."
A.R. Rahman: "I am shocked at the untimely passing away of Michael Jackson, one of the greatest musicians of our times. MJ, for most of our generation was an icon who made uncompromising music. He pushed the milestone of Pop music to unbelievable levels through the 80s and 90s. I am yet to find an artist with that energy, perfection and vision. I met him personally after the Oscars in Los Angeles and we vibed very well. He said that he loved India and the Indian people. He said he heard good things about me and he was praising the chord progression of Jai Ho's chorus.
He was bursting with energy and told me that every dance move he did came from his soul and did a five second stunning example. It was like a lightning strike. He was concerned about developmental issues such as Global Warming and about wars and its damages to the human community. He asked me to compose a unity anthem on the likes of "We are the World" for him. I nodded in awe...!
He introduced me to his three lovely bright kids. The kids told him "I love you Dad". And he replied, "I love you more" as a proud father. I wished him well for his concerts and he said "God Bless you". After hearing the shocking news, I wished it was another rumor which would fade away soon. It took me time to believe that he is no more. I remember, my late sound engineer H. Sridhar had brought me a video of the premiere of 'Remember the Time' when I was recording 'Kadal Rojave' for my first movie Roja. Seeing it inspired all of us that afternoon.
Now, there is no Sridhar and no Jackson anymore. I hope all of us value people's existence more and respect them when they are alive. LIFE IS SHORT...! Artists and their art live for ever. Jai Ho, MJ! We love you for your music, regardless of all the controversies!"
Vishal Dadlani: "Goodbye, Michael Jackson. The one thing we never let you be was a human being. You went from a God to an alien to a demon. But if we remember you for anything but your music, the failing will be ours. Sorry for all the harassment, thank you for all the music."
Wajid (of Sajid-Wajid duo): "It's indeed very sad news, I was driving when I got this message from someone, I was so shocked that I actually stopped driving and started to think about the man since then. It's actually a very big loss to everyone, because all of us have grown up listening to his songs; he was a real example of a perfect singer and performer... a complete artist. I was in fact looking out for his new album that he was composing, but now everything has come to a stand still and I am at a complete loss for words."
Sukhwinder Singh: "I am totally shocked. Since the time I first heard this news, I felt a great sadness from somewhere deep within."
Jatin Pandit: "A major section of the music industry has been wiped out; he was in a class of his own. I was really fortunate enough to witness his performance when he came down to Bombay. He was a rare combination of performance and talent."
Saroj Khan: "It's a great loss to the world. He was not just a lovely dancer, but also a wonderful creator. I admired him very much. God bless his soul to rest in eternal peace."
Ganesh Hegde: "It's an extremely sad day for the whole industry. His death means a total end to the world of music and an era in itself. There's a lot of reason for the fact that I am here and am what I am today. One of the main reasons is none other than the King of Pop Michael Jackson! He is the one who showed the way to many people like me that rags can surely be transformed into riches.
I still remember the day when I had a chance to meet him just for a minute. And trust me, I must have told him 'Sir, I love you' at least 20 times in 10 seconds. He, very generously said that 'I like it'. That's the most important one minute of my life."
I honestly don't mind some mature debate here, u know we don't all have to agree,
im not deleting any posts just for that reason, stick to the rules and we're kool. - Mod
Personally i've been sad and mourning over Michael for a very long time now.
Because the artist Michael died a long time ago....but there was hope of
a comeback or something. He was going to do 50 concerts starting this summer.
He had been rehearsing a lot..he seemed to be really into it.
and yeah i've never said he was a good person or anything but u just
cant deny the fact that he was a very talented soul. I hate what he
did to himself it always made me so incredibly sad to see all that talent
being wasted. But really think of it..the guy lost his entire childhood
his life at the age of 5. He completely lost touch with reality, people
put him on such a high pedestal he actually thought of himself as
king or a messiah...he was so messed up, he never seemed truly
happy with himself. The guy needed a lot of psychological help I think,
which he sadly never got :(
Bluffmaster: I watched his brother speaking at a press conference and he said
"May Allah always be with you". So i guess he really did turn muslim?

I wasn't really a fan of his. But I have to admit, he was one of a kind. I mean there are tons of famous people out there where fans would just jump on them and stuff. But once in lifetime you get someone who isn't just super famous like ther rest but rises a notch or two above everyone and just leaves a mark that no one can forget. I thought it was really shocking that he died so suddenly.
I don't think there was anyone across the globe who left such a huge impact on people of all walks of life. I mean my dad is so old fashioned he doesn't even know who srk salman khan or hrithik roshan are but even he knew who Michael Jackson was. So I definetely think he made his mark alright. Personally I never like what he did to his face later on in his life I thought he looked way better as his original self. really shocking indeed.

Jackson dies, almost takes Internet with him
LONDON, England (CNN) --
How many people does it take to break the Internet? On June 25, we found out it's just one -- if that one is Michael Jackson.
The biggest showbiz story of the year saw the troubled star take a good slice of the Internet with him, as the ripples caused by the news of his death swept around the globe.
"Between approximately 2:40 p.m. PDT and 3:15 p.m. PDT today, some Google News users experienced difficulty accessing search results for queries related to Michael Jackson," a Google spokesman told CNET, which also reported that Google News users complained that the service was inaccessible for a time. At its peak, Google Trends rated the Jackson story as "volcanic."
As sites fell, users raced to other sites: TechCrunch reported that TMZ, which broke the story, had several outages; users then switched to Perez Hilton's blog, which also struggled to deal with the requests it received.
CNN reported a fivefold rise in traffic and visitors in just over an hour, receiving 20 million page views in the hour the story broke.
Twitter (http://topics.edition.cnn.com/topics/twitter_inc) crashed as users saw multiple "fail whales" -- the illustrations the site uses as error messages -- user FoieGrasie posting, "Irony: The protesters in Iran using twitter as com are unable to get online because of all the posts of 'Michael Jackson RIP.' Well done." The site's status blog said that Twitter had had to temporarily disable its search results, saved searches and trend topics.
Wikipedia saw a flurry of activity, with close to 500 edits made to Jackson's entry in less than 24 hours. CNET reported that by 3:15pm PDT, Wikipedia seemed to be "temporarily overloaded."

hamartia.
maybe sum ppl in dis thread shuld google dis so dey wuldnt b whilin out.
honeslty MJ WAS a gud singer and was a legend, but we cant ignore his mistakes and flaws.
his name didnt make it 2 da news all da time cuz of his great singing or awesome dance skillz.
he had a history of doing sum very absurd things and now dat he died every1 is crying and forgiving him.
i live in NY n i know all these news channels dat r mourning his death, were da same channels that used 2 say so much shit abt him wen his child molesting trials were going on.
i admit i USED to like him but dat was da old MJ not this new guy who changed his skin color, had nose jobs, hung kids ovr balconies, and was accused of freakin molesting kids.

Michael Jackson was truly a genius. I still can't believe he has passed away. It's very shocking, that he died at such an early age. The fact that he was an incredibly talented person is surely undeniable. He wrote lyrics, he sang, and he was one of the amazing dancers I have ever seen.
I would really like to know more on the causes of his death. He left an ever lasting impact. I think the media and the society exaggerated the wrong accusations claimed on him, and made his life living hell. Even though he was found not guilty, his career and life were devastated. I wish, I had gotten to see more of him.
May he rest in peace.

Bang on Target .. what a huge waste of talent
Now is't it smethin wat Britney is doin to herself
Comparing MJ to Britney is one lousy and ridiculous comparison. One side you're dealing with a man who invented the moonwalk, one album alone (Thriller) has said to be 20x platinum soon..he's what people refer to as a legend (look that up in your vocab, or add it in your case) and the other is a mere bimbo who has accomplished what exactly?....a hair trend with the shaved head? - Sure MJ had his rough times in the past and as someone above mentioned he had 'flaws' .. let's not forget, MJ was as human as every other person on this planet and it's not like he was the only one doing what was seen as outrageously absurd like getting plastic surgeries or accusations against child abuse.. so do we forget the other folk in the world who are living in your own towns doing the exact same thing? MJ was exposed 'cause of his fame, fortune.. if he didn't have that, he wouldn't be named MJ would he? His life, he did what he wanted and the media can distort anything to make you believe such misconceptions...you're supposed to use your 'brains' to create opinions, not your bloody eyes or ears.
In terms of his music, yes he was surely something else. It's what he contributed to music as a whole that counts..his voice, his moves, his passion that led him to fame.. how far his achievements and talent have brought him..he's inspired generations - We're talking about someone who's inspired thousands..millions..we're talking mass numbers - i highly doubt you've managed to inspire a single soul in your lifetime thus far - He's far superior to today's stars, they've always looked up to him. He's clearly impacted our world and will continue to do so forever i'm sure, it's time to realise and accept this clear fact.

thanks Amna for clarifying that, some "immature" members needed it
Seriously you people how hard is it to debate without insulting each other?
Refrain from calling each other things like immature, or "twat". Im sure you
can be more mature then that, and actually come up with arguments
to prove ur point.

I admire your essay writing ,, but your not good at it
.. When I said I was comparing MJ to Britney it was in terms of fame when when get of too much .Not in terms of success.some people can handle . .some can't .. it gets in the HEAD.. I don't know why u have written a whole essay on a point I did't even talk about .Too much free time?..
Britney started with much promise and she had such a fan following .. she was next big thing in 90's Pop.. She was a role model to millions of teens...
MJ just could't handle all the fame he had .. thats what led to his downfall
Plastic surgies are common? RAre r fucking kidding me? somebody turning from Black to white is common? somebody changing his religion constantly is common? Somebody molesting childern is common?Fact is he was a villain for media .. its just that medias kind to him now hes dead....
"i highly doubt you've managed to inspire a single soul in your lifetime thus far"
and you have achieved anything ? like writing crap ...
But I will not say much cuz D said so ...

I hate everything thats happening with his kids and the will now..i mean he's made it clear
he wants his mom to raise them. why are people trying to question that even if they arent
biologically his kids, he was their dad for them, they grew up in the Jackson family..
and I hate how he had to die to finally get the appreciation from the media
he should have gotten a long time ago..but they were to busy bashing him
back den.

Awwwww man today is MJ's Funeral I cried when i saw his daughter Crying in her speech that was soo emotional :( RIP MJ
I've been a total mess ever since they showed his casket being carried into
the car. I cried when they carried it on stage, when everyone spoke those
beautiful words about him..i cried when Brooke Shields cried, when Jermaine
Jackson sung "Smile" and choked up..when Marlon Jackson could barely speak
and most of all I cried when his daughter said he was the greatest dad.
Love him and miss him so much.

I watched the memorial today, and I'm usually not the type to get emotional but when his daughter cried I couldn't hold my tears back. I still can't believe he's gone. I'm just like no God for once reverse your decision and send him back, the world needs people like him he wasn't just a dancer and singer but so much more. He will be truly missed. So many people have good memories that are tied to him, very sad day indeed I didn't think he would be gone so soon.

did anyone watch the mj memorial on tuesday morning? it was so sad. i continously cried. especiallly toward the end when mj's brother said that the paparazzi's & the media will now finallly leave mj alone. i totally balled when his 11 year old daughter spoke out saying he was the best dad ever. my goodness. i stilll cant believe he's no more. although, it feels like when he was around people kept listening to the rumors and ridiculing him & now that hes gone people are like "what a great legend". i find that really weird. anyways, any thoughts on the memorial?

Oh for me that was so hard to watch as they carried the casket on to the stage and
the chorus sang ""Going to See the King" I couldnt hold back my tears..
It amazing how everyone talked about how he was
The Greatest Entertainer of All Time, but in the end when his family was up
there and his daugther spoke..it made u realize he was human, he was a dad,
he was their lil brother...a son..and god that its just tragic, Made me think
I am so completely shattered by this and im just a fan ..imagine the pain they
must be feeling :(
something else im also realzing these days..for me MJ had no skin color, gender or
religion. I barely thought about those things when I thought of him..he was just MJ.
Its been almost 2 weeks now and I still cant stop crying and im shocked at how
big the impact of it has been on my life..its like he took a part of my life with him
or something i know that must sound really weird...

Well I there is so much I can say about mj..
If anyone has read or really bothered to get to know the real mj, I don't mean the mj that the world knows as the one who entertains sings and dances and make people happy, but the real person and human being behind it all, would have understood just how simple and pure hearted of a person he was.
When I look back at it all, mj was just a sweet little kid who was stuck in an aging man's body, who never really trusted anyone except kids in who he saw God to him there were pure and innocent, without prejudice and in them he found his childhood, and in return he gave so much to sick kids and helped so many, and that too the media and the world took his pure love of kids and turned it into something sick and disgusting just so their stories would sell.
I think mj just died of a broken heart and this world never really understood him thats all and now he's gone but he's now where no one can hurt him, good people don't stay too long I guess. He will be truly missed.

It was a very sad memorial, but mj is now in a better place. I think this world wasn't good enough for him. He will always be part of an era when times were good, an era that has passed away in time, the world is a very different place today than it was when he first came onto the scene. He will truly be missed, but his music is with us and will live on.
^ Exactly. He's gone but will be never forgotten. Here's lil something that
made me smile, watch it ur feeling sad...hes ADORABLE pure cuteness.

Hey D you seem to taking this pretty hard, but what to do live will go on you know.
1. I was really young, but even after many years it released, I remember seeing his video thriller on tv, and there was just something I really liked about it and I use to think to myself wow who is this guy and what a video, this was like the late 80"s.
2. Billie Jean, Thriller, beat it, Your are not alone, The way you make feel, black or white, when it comes to michael jackson picking the top 5 isn't easy.
3. I like the lyrics to the song You are not alone, ever since he passed away I get this feeling as if he wrote it for all us to keep us going after he was gone, its been so difficult to listen to, knowing that voice we will never hear again.
4. I like you are not alone, black or white, and thriller of course, billie jean the way you make me feel, I can't really single out just one.
5.No haven't moonwalked.
6. I like his red leather jacket from the video thriller, and the GLOVE OF COURSE!
7. NO
8. No
9. No
10. I like the thriller beat it era, because that's the way the world really came to know him, and the reason is he was still looking normal, like the original good looking handsome Michael Jackson I always choose to see him as his old self, not like what he became later on. He was so Handsome I don't think anyone will ever understand why he did what he did to his face.
11. Listening to his music and watching videos.
12. There will never be another MJ, everyone loved him yet he had no one to call his own, He gave everyone happiness, and everyone young and old has got some fond memories tied his music. He was in pain and lonely yet he always had a smile on his face. He came down to earth for a short time to leave a legend behind and is now gone, he did what no one before him did, and I doubt in our lifetime we will see someone doing something like that, he wasn't just a great entertainer but so much more, a real good pure soul.
Gogi I know there is nothing fake about him, specially in that video
the shyness in his voice, the pure smile..asking his sisters on stage its
too sweet for words :mgreen:
Doe eye beauty, yeah Im really surprised myself at how hard this hit me.
but I think the memorial really helped, i think im done grieving now and
trying to accept things and just enjoy his music, his legacy =)
Those of u who watched the memorial probably heard the
poem Maya Angelou wrote for Michael, its so beautiful :(
specially this line; He gave us all he had been given.
"We Had Him"
Beloveds, now we know that we know nothing, now that our bright and
shining star can slip away from our fingertips like a puff of summer wind.
Without notice, our dear love can escape our doting embrace. Sing our
songs among the stars and walk our dances across the face of the moon.
In the instant that Michael is gone, we know nothing. No clocks can tell
time. No oceans can rush our tides with the abrupt absence of our
treasure.
Though we are many, each of us is achingly alone, piercingly alone.
Only when we confess our confusion can we remember that he was a gift
to us and we did have him.
He came to us from the creator, trailing creativity in abundance.
Despite the anguish, his life was sheathed in mother love, family love, and
survived and did more than that.
He thrived with passion and compassion, humor and style. We had him
whether we know who he was or did not know, he was ours and we were his.
We had him, beautiful, delighting our eyes.
His hat, aslant over his brow, and took a pose on his toes for all of us.
And we laughed and stomped our feet for him.
We were enchanted with his passion because he held nothing. He gave us all he had been given.
Today in Tokyo, beneath the Eiffel Tower, in Ghana's Black Star Square.
In Johannesburg and Pittsburgh, in Birmingham, Alabama, and Birmingham, England
We are missing Michael.
But we do know we had him, and we are the world.
Gotta love him he cant even tell a straight lie LMAO n the things ppl accuse him off
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eD_LE6HJqZw
''I go thru hell touring. Okay, I'll make it more positive.. I love to tour''. oh Mike :custom13:
His influence still really is everywhere
