Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Maara (2005) – In a story dating back and forth partition, a retired professor begins to hold himself responsible for the assassination for Gandhi. Anupam Kher plays the professor suffering from dementia, and his daughter Urmila Matondkar tries hard to keep her cool even as he seems to be losing his mind. Both competent actors fill up the film with their stellar performances, and though this film did not find a large audience, it has to be seen to be believed that mainstream actors are not all about song and dance.

The Making Of The Mahatma (1996) – An ambitious project by Shyam Benegal, has his favourite actor Rajit Kapur enacting the role of Gandhi during his 21 years in South Africa. It tells of his struggle in those years and how it shaped the Mahatma to be the father of the Indian nation, seeking at first equality for all. The film won both its actor and producer the National Award in 96. It would be great to re-visit and see why.

Hey Ram (2000) – Kamal Haasan produced-acted and directed this min gem of a film which had its share of big stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji. Gandhi’s great grandson too made an appearance in the film. The film is a period drama accounting India’s partition and Gandhi’s assassination. Although the film met with little commercial success, it was a critic favourite and even went to the Oscars. A must watch.
